In 1957, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) assigned area code 509 to the eastern two-thirds of Washington. In 1995, 206 was split, creating a new area code 360 to facilitate communication in the western part of 206 independently.
However, even after the split of 360, 206 numbers were on the brink of exhaustion, so NANPA introduced new area codes 253 and 425 to cover the southern portion, including Tacoma, Auburn, and Puyallup. Currently, Washington has six area codes, and 206 only covers most of the Seattle area. Area code 564 is the approved overlay for area code 206 in the future.
